NTLDR missing

I have a Toshiba laptop with Win XP/sp2 that I was trying to install a new program on and now I get ntldr missing. I have a win XP home recovery disk but when I load it into recovery, the disk see’s the operating system but won’t accept any passwords that I use. The Toshiba disk that came with the laptop only restores everything to original. I have a tech CD that I can get into dos but its a win 98 cd.
