NVIDIA Drivers in Linux

Does anyone know a sure fire way of getting NVIDIA drivers installed on Linux?

I’ve been toiling on this for days now with little to no sucess, i’ve tried using the NVIDIA auto installer with a variety of errors turning up, each time i resolve one, another pops up.
I’ve tried editing /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 after editing various pieces of information!
