Odd error- some webpages refuse to open…

Hi,

As I’m fairly good with computers, I routinely fix my girlfriend’s pc whenever anything goes wrong with it. However, this time, when her mum said that something was wrong with it and it was running slow, I ran into a snag.

I ran the usual bunch of scans (spyware, adware, virus, system problems), and updated their system (MS update), but even though they had a whole bunch of spyware etc there wasn’t really anything else that I could find wrong with it- and I thought I’d gotten it mostly sorted.

When I tried connecting to Microsoft’s free OneCare scanner though, Internet Explorer suddenly timed out and couldn’t open the page. Disturbingly, this same weird error happened every time their computer tried to access Symantec’s update site (they’re running NIS 2007). Now I thought at first that, even though I hadn’t found anything, that maybe it was some setting in IE7 set all wrong, so I installed firefox 2, but this came up with the same error whenever it tried accessing those sites, even though both browsers had no problem with sites like google etc.

I’m tempted to say that this is some sort of virus, as it only seems to be targeting (sofar) sites which can get rid of viruses (the live one scanner and norton’s updater), but I don’t have a clue how to get rid of it, or to even see if it’s there. Has anyone else encountered this problem and have a clue how to fix it, as right now their Antivirus won’t update etc and I don’t know if this will bother Spybot or Ad-Aware?

So yeah… anyone know what do do here? I’m completely stumped.
