On Facebook, what are the differences between a Status and a Note?

I have only used the Status thing in the past and whenever I’ve gotten too wordy, it tells me and makes me trim it down to 420 characters (I think) or it offered to post it as a Note. I didn’t have a clue what a Note was, so I always worked hard to trim it down to that 420 characters. And if I couldn’t trim it down to 420 without losing something important, I would just post 420 and then add the rest as a Comment after I posted it.
But it would also offer me to Edit it as a Note. I just always declined that since I didn’t have a clue what a Note was and had never done one.
But today I finally did one and now I am trying to learn how they work and what differences there may be with Statuses.
Are there any differences that I should know about? Maybe who sees Notes them? It looks like both show up in your News Feed that is put out to your Friends. Maybe who can add Comments or …..?
My daughter told me that Notes have a section on your Wall and so they can be easier to find since someone doesn’t need to scroll way down to find them like they would to find a Status that you posted a long time ago.
So, is that the only difference?
