Operating System not found – F2 – F10

I have a dell Laptop that has the problem of loosing its operating system. Now if I hit F2 at the bio’s start up and the just save and quit out of the bio’s, not changing anything it finds the system just fine. Any ideas towards what the problem is? I am running XP
