Problem: Long and frequent timeouts in Outlook.
Our config: NT4, Ex 5.5 network protected by a Cisco PIX 506. One XP Pro station running Outlook 2k which needs to connect to another NT4, Ex5.5 network using a Symantec Enterprise VPN firewall.
After many hours of trial and error we have succeeded in getting the Outlook client to talk through the Symantec VPN software client to the other Exchange 5.5 Server. However, communication sets up very slowly and is frequently interrupted with lengthy timeouts.
Just to get it working required HOST and LMHOSTS entries to resolve DNS. Pings quickly, Symantec client log does not show connection loss.
OWA client works quickly.
