Outlook hanging when receiving mail

Outlook 2003 is hanging occassionally when receving email. It continuosly says ‘receiving 1 of ….(e.g 10)’ and remains like that until it is timed out. This error only occurs on POP3 accounts only. I am running exchange 2000.
How can I resolve this?
