Outlook/Word deselects when trying to type over

Hi all

If i am trying to (for example) replace a line of text, i would

1) select the line of text
2) start typing
(normally removes the selected text and starts again)

for some reason this now goes ‘text deselected’ and so therefore not deleted…?

any ideas? guessing a bug or a shortcut?
