Password

I entered a user password on my computer. Being that my husband was home and I wasn’t available, he tried to reset the password, but they asked him for the old one. Now upon opening the computer a screen automatically pops up and says that this is a user password authenticated computer. When trying to type in the original password it won’t work, and whatever buttons I press, would not help… how can i start my computer and reset the password?
