peer to peer in Linux

My partner and I are both running mandrake 8.2 and are wanting to see each other’s machine in a network. Is there some configuration that has to be done, or it the network already configured? We are connected and pinging each other via a hub but areunable to see shares on each other’s machine. How do we accomplish this?
