Pool storage on networked computers for archive purposes

by thetimc . Updated 13 years ago

Hi Folks,

Long time reader, just joined up to pose a question.

I’m sure I came across a software system in the past that allowed you to make use of the free storage on all the PCs on the network. It used some kind of distributed redundancy, i.e. making sure data was stored in two or three places and all data stored was encrypted so couldn’t be accessed directly from the PC. The performance of this would probably not lend itself well to standard storage on a large network, but it would be perfect for extending the retention times of our backups without investing in more storage.

I can’t remember who made this software. Have any of you come across anything like this before?

Here’s hoping, TheTimC.
