pop3 accounts and meeting requests

(Users have MS Outlook only one side is running Exchange)

Is there any way that a pop3 email account can receive and respond to a meeting request sent from an Outlook / Exchange system?

If all users must have Exchange, is there such thing as an Exchange ‘Lite’ or perhaps a third-party app that can be configured and run on the pop3 users pc?
