pop3 server problems

Who have a step by step guide to configure a pop3 or imap server on a linux sistem… i cant get it working it says: “conicting to myhoustname” then says “scape character ‘^]'” wait a little and then
“Connection closed by foreign host.”
what could be wrong in my settings, at least where should i look for it…
