Printing a pdf file on a HP Laserjet 4L

I have an old HP Laser Jet 4L that runs off a parallel port. I have a parallel / USB converter that works just fine on a Toshiba Tecra with Vista, but not with Adobe on a Toshiba Portege R600 running XP.
All other programs print normally, but Adobe prints at close to double size. I have tried contacting Adobe and have run through all of their “hints” with no success.
I have the latest driver for the printer.
In addition, if I print from the Portege through the Tecra attached to the printer, via a network, it works normally.
Any help would be appreciated.
