problem starting MS Office 2003 applications

When I start any of the office applications – Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook – it starts the setup utility, I cancel it, get an error message, then the application opens up correctly. It used to open up correctly without any hassles. It still works, but its a nuisance. What happened? Thanks for any help.
