Problems with a 100Mb switch and 10 Mb hub

This is a strange problem and I believe it to be in the wall outlet.
I have a small home office network set up. I have a cable internet modem, Netgear router, d-link switch and a 10Mb hub downstreamed in that order. I am trying to replace the 10Mb hub with a 100Mb switch. In the original configuration, all works well (although slow on the hub) but when I replace the hub with the switch, I get only the light that shows the cable from the wall outlet. All other computers or devices attached to the new switch show no lights and “cable unplugged” on the computers.
The bizarre part is that if I plug directly into the outlet, I get 100Mb connection. I tested the switch on the other end of the wire to the wall outlet and it works fine there. In other words, I connected the new switch downstream of the d-link switch just before the wire goes into the wall to the other (in question) wall outlet. So I know that the switch functions properly.
Any ideas as to what may be causing this issue. I am moving to another room in the house and I will be using a different cable soon but I would still like to know what the cause may be in case I want to use this outlet another way.
Thank you in advance.
