RAS is slow.

I have set up RAS on a new server running MS Backoffice Small Business Server 4.5 and a workstation running NT Workstation 4.0. The workstation dials in and logs on fine, but the connection is so slow that it is practically unusable. I have tried using TCP/IP and NetBEUI with no noticable difference. How can I speed it up?
