Rates in a bad market

Greetings!
I am a contractor currently available for assignment.

What I am noticing this time around, is that contract rates are running lower overall, yet the costs of doing business are much higher than before. So, I am looking for a rate increase
at a time that it appears that the market is not going to bear an increase.

Anybody have wisdom to share?
