Re-Install a NIC

by empty . Updated 19 years, 4 months ago

Greetings All from the edge of the world.
I have a puzzle I have spent way too many hours on with no
break.

I have been tasked with connecting a school Ubuntu desktop
with a 9very cute girls) Edu -> up -> Kubuntu laptop.
Eventually to a large private mixed Os network and an unknown
future school network.

The laptop is a new Averatec 7100.
I tested the NIC via XP -> W98 and it was good. Booted Kubuntu
and saw it there.
I swear that the laptop listed the NIC in the Network-Admin.
So I set Synaptic to bringing in Frozen Bubble Wine, Enigma –
the requisit student stuff AND the latest DHCP and went to
tea.
Later thinking all was swell I set about getting the cable up
etc and when I went to set up the NIC – you guessed it – it
had vanished! POOF!
I have l0, wlan0, wmaster0, ppp0 but NO eth0!!!
So I buggered about trying to figure out what I had done and
being dense I hadent writ down what I had told Synaptic.
I cant figure out how to undo what I did whilst at tea….
So I figured I would MAKEDEV eth0 and see if I could
reconstruct it – even if I havent a clue but of course Konsole
says it dosent know how.
So I go searching for everyone else who had this problem and I
am an island…. every tutorial, text, forum etc STARTS from
the Network-Admin seeing eth0…..
ifconfig dosent see it, Network manager dosent see it…
lspci sees it – “04:00.0 Ethernet controller: Agere Systems
ET-131x PCI-E Ethernet Controller (rev 01)”

I hope that explains how I got here with a clue…

I need a way to make the NIC visible again as a network device
or re install the NIC so I can get the thing off my desk and
get back to breaking my own stuff.

Thanks for your time.
