Recommendation for Encryption Freeware

I’m trying to find encryption freeware that can run on UNIX. I need PCP, and need to be able to read a data element from a file, make a call to a procedure to encrypt the selected value, and return the encrypted value to a variable. Do you have any recommendations on stable software that can do this that provides PCP?
