Red Hat Linux 9 & _VERY_ slow imapd

by schotty . Updated 22 years, 9 months ago

Hello!

I have a RHL 9 server running at my residence, for testing out and learning on my own new (to me) services and to better learn the ins and outs of Linux. While deciding to upgrade my workstation, I decided since I archive several mail lists (including Tech Republic), I should find a better way to migrate. I was not using my server for this previously. imapd came up and it does work, however to access any folder, much less my Red Hat list folder, is horrendously slow. I have tried different distros, mail clients, different networking hardware — nothing has helped. So I am confident that it is a admin error in configuring the machine. Other than imap, I do have DNS, DHCP, Apache, NFS, and Samba all running without any lag whatsoever.

Digging around on Google, I have found several ideas that were good ones, including something I feel like a moron for not going to FIRST, kill any firewall. I did that since I have no broadband and the only risk I have is when I host LAN parties. Still the connection is just nasty. The server itself is blazing fast when trying to access my folders, so either that much data is trying to pushed over the ethernet wire, or something is not right.

Any hints/tips/revelation-from-God ?

Thanks!

Andrew
