Redhat MP3 problems and linux help?

Ok, So I am a newbie. I have Redhat 9 installed, but I think I had this problem before when I had 8 on. I cannot play any MP3’s with XMMS or any program. I have a Windows mounted partition that I get them from and I even copied some MP3’s to my homefolder. I never get an error, I just load one up and nothing happens.

What could it be?

Also, Where is a good place/site to ask these type of questions about Linux, like I can ask here about Windows?
