remote login denied

I would like to remotely install Omniback II 4.0 to a Linux 7.0 client. But from the cell manager I am denied access to the Linux box (user or password not recognized). Ftp or telnet does not work either from the cell manager. Yet all network configuration is in order on the Linux box (/etc/hosts, resolv.conf). Do I need an auth file under /etc/pam.d for ftp?
