Replacing XP Home with XP Media Center Edition

by daknel . Updated 18 years, 1 month ago

Dilemma here, have two machines with XP Home, would like to replace one with XP Media Center Edition.

Two reasons for this, one, I could use the Media Center Edition, but the real reason I want the CD is to fix a problem with my granddaughters laptop. She has the Media Edition, it has a bug, and when I run Scannow, it demands the XP Media Center Edition CD to repair the problem. Scannow doesn’t tell you what the problem is, of course, and I have tried all the work arounds with the i386 files, etc, editing the registry, but no success. I need a XP Media Center Edition CD.

Advise from others so far: A shop tells me I can purchase the OEM version and it will work.

Microsoft tells me I can’t do that, it won’t work.

A popular net retailer will sell me the CD, but apparently I have to buy 4 other components to build a pc, so it will look like I’m building a pc from scratch, otherwise I can’t get licensing for the OS. Confused here, am looking for the straight scoop.

PS: I do not need the Media Center CD for my own use, although it would be OK, but what I want to do is get a CD so I can comply with the demands of my granddaughters HP laptop. sigh!

Has anyone been here before?
