requirements for Linux

I’m not Linux savy at all. I’ve been using Windows at my house and UNIX terminals at work (US NAVY). I would like to convert my old computer into a Linux machine. It’s an original Gateway 933Mhz with a video card and Linksys 10/100 NIC and currently running Win XP OEM. I will be building another computer and then I’ll have a computer w/o a HD.

I’m interested in having a Linux machine at the house so I can play with the OS and maybe eventually make it a file/web/print server for the house network that’s connected to a Linksys BEFSR41 router. Any suggestions? contact me via e-mail with Linux in the subject.
