RH9 Upgrade

I recently upgraded from RH8 to RH9. Now when I get to login screen and type in root or any other user, it starts to make like is is going to get me to a desktop but then goes right back to the login screen. I read some RH documentation on how to reset the root passwd by getting into single user mode. So I reset the passwd, but the problem still exist. It is starting to get on my nerves because I can no remote to the pc either because in the upgrade process it seems to have chnaged some of my security settings. What can I do to rectify the problem?
