Router/Modem Help

by peters_no_1 . Updated 18 years, 6 months ago

Hey everyone, I’ve recently been connected to ADSL2+. I received a modem (Netgear ADSL2+ Modem DM111P) from my ISP Netspace. I then purchased a external ADSL2+ router (TP-LinkTD-8840), which I’ve been trying to connect to my desktop pc and laptop (both running Windows XP). I currently have the laptop connected to the ADSL via the router via the modem, same for the desktop. I have organized the whole connection this way:

ISP via Phone Line —> ADSL Splitter/Filter —> Phone cable to modem —> Ethernet Cable from Modem to Router Port 1 —> Ports 2 and 3 to desktop pc and laptop using Ethernet cables.

I am unable to connect the desktop pc and the laptop together with the router and to use the ADSL on both at the same time. When both computers are plugged into the router, only the laptop recieves the connection. After running the Windows IP Configuration on the desktop pc, I receive the following message:

Ethernet adaptor Local Area Connection 4:
Connection-specific DNS suffix . : (blank)
IP Address . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . : 0.0.0.0
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . . . : 0.0.0.0
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . . . : (blank)

While the laptop (which is connected and works) receives:

Ethernet adaptor Local Area Connection :
Connection-specific DNS suffix . : home
IP Address . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . : 220.253.23.xxx
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.xxx
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . . . : 203.17.101.xxx

When I try accessing the routers information through Internet Explorer by using 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1, I am are unable to do so because we receive information about the modem. I’m not sure if this step is nessecary. The CD I received from the routers manufacturer prompts me to log in with a IP address/name and password (name and password were on the box), and I think the IP should be 192.168.1.1. While the modem is plugged in I am unable to log in. After disconnecting the modem to test if I could log in (but the modem needs to be connected) I was able to log in, but I have no idea as to what the settings should be.

Any help/tips will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
(sorry this message is so long)
