Save/Save filename problem

When I save a document named eg ‘Transformer’
Word 97 shortens the filename to T. A filename ‘regulus’ tufrns into ‘r’.
Have reinstalled software, and rolled back XP.
.rtf files saved with full filename. Macrovirus protection enabled.
Very strange! Advice would be gratefully received.
