Set a resolution

I tried to change the resolution of my monitor from 600*400 to 800*600 with Xconfigurators. Every time I chose something else except 600*400, I got an error message syggest me to go back and change it to 600*400. My computer is a dual boot and I have no problem setting up 800*600 from the Windows side. Can someone help?
