SMS vs AD for software deployment

I am involved in a discussion at work over what to use to install software on users computers. We have approx. 4000 pc’s in a native mode windows 2000 environment. We currently use SMS to deploy software packages. I would like to move to AD for this functionality but am getting resistance from management. Any information would be appreciated.
