Ten years ago, I did a survey of IT departments (as opposed to traditional software vendors) and the degree to which they were selling software they had developed or the degree to which they were buying software from other IT departments. I am updating a paper based on the pros and cons of this concept, but in so doing, found very few recent
references to IT departments that were doing this. The lack of references could be attributed to decreasing interest in the benefits of doing this or it might simply be that tendencies such as increased purchasing of commercially available products and the implementation of ERP systems has dampened interest in “in-house” developed software.
Are there still IT groups out there doing this? Do you thinkthis is still viable alternative to developing your own software? What problems have you run into when engaging in software sales/purchases with other IT departments?
