su is not working in suse10

Hi,
When the home directory field of a user in the passwd file is null the su command is not working properly. When that user trying to do su, suse10 is giving an output like user doesnot exist, but in suse9 it is working fine. Why in suse10 it is not working? Is there any solution for that or how to handle such a situation?
