Subnet Mask

I’m in a hospital and have a private network that is 10.0.0.0 255.0.0.0 and only have about 500 nodes. Is this causing too much broadcast and degrading performance? I know vlans would help separate buildings or departments for security, but I really haven’t had the need for that yet. Any knowledge or pitfalls would be greatly appreciated.
