Switching careers

Like so many other people today I am in the process of making a career change into the IT world. I have studied relational database and SQl and have created several relational databases for different work projects but this just does not seem to be enough to land a job in database management. Could someone please enlighten me as to how to land a job in DB management without the ungodly amount of experience that is required. OR where do I go to get the experience if companies will not hire me.
