System restore – do I need to run it from same copy of XP?

I have a long-running problem with a DLL image error. I’ve searched for answers and have concluded (lots of support on this from various places) that I need to reinstall XP or run System Restore. I can’t find my original CD and don’t have the Certificate of Authenticity, so that won’t work (MS will send replacement if you have it). I want to run System Restore but from another XP Pro CD and not do a full install as that one is running on another system.

My question: Can I run System Restore from that other copy of WinXP, fix the broken system and not do any reinstall?
