Tape Drive under Unix os

Hi,
I have to install a tape drive in a server running unix os. My background is pc windows. I am A+ cert but have not worked with unix. It is at a pharmacy and the software that runs on it is proprietary and intended for the pharmacy. What will I need to know. Is the install different than with Windows. Any and all help APPRECIATED!!!Thank You
