Tape Drives Under Linux

I have an HP 12/24 gb DAT on a system running RedHat Linux 6.1. When I open KDat and attempt to load a tape I get a message saying “No Tape In Drive”, even though the drive light is on. I have tried cleaning the drive and tried to mount the tape anyway, but still get the same message! any ideas..?
