Telnet

The other day I was farnarckling around on my linux box to try to get printing working to a HP network port. Now I cant telnet in via the internet. I know that’s not necessarily a bad thing, but I cant ssh in either. I just get a “connection refused” error. If I am on a machine on the local network I can telnet in, but I cant do it via the internet. Has anyone got any ideas as to why this might be happening and where I might look?
