Something has to be done about the Marketing behind IT jobs. The ?high demand? is not there. Right now seasoned IT Personnel are on the bench warming along with Naive rookies. The days when you could quit your IT Job find a parallel slide in pay at a better company are over.
Yes you will see a MCSE with 4 year diploma and at least 2 years experience apply for your helpdesk job. Yes you will see in the paper that the hiring company will expect a college diploma in MIS/MIT along with a Certification and experience ::they will advertise that with a straight face::
Right now the Market favors the Employer not the Employee/Job Hunter.
Job hopping to progressive opportunities is next to unheard of. Outsourcing sends our jobs overseas and easy to use GUIs make the average user think he/she is a Networking Guru.
A Technician?s skill-set has been reduced to swap-tronics or fix it by purchase order. We pile up Administrator tasks on Engineers and Help Desk tasks on Administrators. We downsize IT because a product advertises that it is self healing and takes less to manage and maintain.
Why have Viruses and Spyware become are our only job security? Does it really save money to pile things up and contract out a full time position? Why are we forgetting that our best knowledge base is our IT Staff not a corruptible database?
The last time we hired a Hybrid Position (yes you will have twice the duties for the least amount of pay) we had four hundred applicants in 2002, four hundred applicants in 2003 and three hundred applicants in 2004. I think the last one hundred applicants in 2004 moved to India to find work. [Mike Dupris]
