The recipient name is not recognized

We are using Exchange 5.5 sp4 NT 4. When a user emails someone at mary-m@domain.com they receive a message “Your message did not reach some or all the intended recipients. The recipient name is not recognized.

Any suggestions on how to fix the problem? Thanks
