The VPN that I used to see New Zealand television is no longer working.

To watch New Zealand television via TVNZ, I used NordVPN and Windscribe. Live TV is still working this week, but not on demand. I get geo-blocked and a warning telling me to “deactivate any VPN or Smart DNS service” I’m using if I’m in New Zealand.
What are their methods for identifying this, and what can I do to stop them?
