Things to look for in a NetMan DB

by jasonc . Updated 25 years, 2 months ago

This is a followup to a question in the Q&A about database type products that can help in storing information about a LAN/WAN.

Since there don’t seem to be many products out there for this sort of requirement, I’m considering spending a little time and knocking something together, so thought I’d ask about what sort of thing people think should be stored.

My ideas as follows:

Ability to store Make/Model/Serial# of Router(s), Switches, etc, together with the IP Addresses of the interfaces, and whether or not the interfaces are in use.

Circuit Numbers, Bandwidth, Type, Cost, etc.

Maintenance Contract Details?

Lists of IP Networks (incl. Masks for subnetted networks), ideally with Notes, etc.

Lists of used Addresses in a subnet/network, such as Printers, Static Servers, and DHCP Scope, etc.

I’m not really thinking about doing much with Servers, other than listing the IP Addresses assigned to them within a given subnet. I don’t really care about make/model/specs as there are other tools to document/record this.

Thanks in advance for your input…
