Time for connecting, ftp /telnet

Hi,

I have connected 2 small office, with 9.6k leased line
with modem using ppp with linux system on both ends.
It takes lots of time for connecting, ftp /telnet
etc…Once connected things work fine.

Where as from remote end to my local things is fast.

What could be wrong?
