Time to move on?

by ticoloco . Updated 21 years, 7 months ago

A few months ago my boss for 7 years received a promotion to VP of IT at one of our sister companiesand left our dept. Was it my turn to step in? well, I in fact applied to the position fulfilling all the technical skills set and knowledge but lacking of managerial experience.

I was aware that 2 other candidates were being considered, one of them with plenty of experience as IT director. Internally I was not aware that none of my peers were considering it because I think none of them did have what it would take. I was well aware about my lack of management experiece would be a big point against me but with some mentoring and a lot of learning I would pull it off. And if I didn’t get the job I would be ok and understand why.

To make the story short, I was shocked that the newest IT member got the job, an application programmer, with no or little technical knowledge about everything (doesn’t know what a T1 is), couple of years of management and who knows what else. The CFO told me that they went with a more experienced and well rounded candidate. hahaha.

I was glad I didn’t get the position because I realized I was not prepared for the challenge but I am struggling with the fact that it wasn’t a more experienced professional that will manage a 20 year old IT dept. on a 100+million$ a year company.
I know I have to let that go and that I have to make my boss look good but what if that boss is not technical and is starting to make changes across the board?
Right now I’m not comfortable where I am and I’m looking elsewhere for better and wiser of a environment. Am I going to fast here?
