To change support job to Development

Hai there,
I am working for an IT Service Support team at a company.BAsically my job is to provide support to the existing product in the front of database. To climb the corporate ladder i feel that the development exposure is a must. What do u say?
I am providing database support, by tracking the problems in the data flow in an manufacturnig industry.But i dont see a prspctive future in this current Non-IT industry. But to shift to an IT Industaryt on a developing Domain.what should i take into account. How to shape my career?
I have my Bacholar’s degree In CS. 1 Yr experience.
