Ubuntu 6

I have installed Ubuntu ver 6 in my laptop, during the installation process was asked to create a normal user account. But when I try to access some folders or install any program it ask me for root password, I can remember it, because during the process there is no step tp setup root password. Can you help me in this issue? thank you.
