Unable to open files with long extension

I am using NT Server 4.0 . When I go to dos command line with start/run/cmd, and try to open some file using c:\edit , I can’t do this if file name extension is > 3 characters. How do I set command line to accept long file extensions ? I wouldlike to know the soln for NT and 98/95.
