UNIX — a thing of the past or future?

Just informed Tuesday that I would need to learn UNIX, Shell Programming and Vi for a program that is inhouse. I thought UNIX was done away with the WANG computers (am I dating myself??)…. Anyhow… just trying to get a feedback on how importantthese might be to other applications out there…… Would love to hear from you….
