Has anybody had experience with a an unrecognizable OS prompt at boot up? This is the second time I’ve had to contend with this problem on the same computer. Any suggestions/ideas as to why this happens? To overcome the the problem the first time, I had to physically remove the hard drive and install it in another computer and configured it to be the second drive in order to initiate the reinstallation of the win 98 OS. In the original computer, the hard drive would not accept reinstallation of the OS (thus the reason behind installing it in another computer). However, once the installation was begun on the second computer (up to the point where a boot up disk was created), the drive was removed and then re-installed into the originalcomputer for the rest of the installation where files are copied and registry adjusted accordingly. This worked like a charm. However, I’m back to square one after about 3 weeks of flawless operation. What can be causing this “unrecognized OS” condition?? Is it a faulty hard drive (a Maxtor 20 G drive) or is it a motherboard problem (it’s over 5 years old – runs a Pentium II processor – 333 Ghz)??
