Unzip a file from Red-Hat Operating System

Hi,

New to REd-Hat Linux and would like to know how to uncompress or unzip a .z file i have ftp’d over from another unix operating system.

I see the file in the directory but have ried a variety of uncompres, unzip etc but none of those commands work

Any assistance greatly appreciated
